Heisman Contenders Kick Season Off With A Bang
As the season gets underway, coaches and players game plan, strategize, and practice in hopes of winning that illusive National Championship. Of course, a coach’s game plan and job is a lot easier when he can count on his star running back getting 150 yards a game. Or even a QB who can run a 4.4, stop on a dime, and hit a double
covered receiver right in the hands 50 yards downfield. Or if it’s 3rd and two miles, and the QB throws the biggest moon ball you’ve ever seen, and your 6’4 receiver snatches it out of the air and breaks two tackles on his way to the end zone. It is easy for a coach to game plan when you have one of those on your team. Everyone wants a STUD.
Players will not say it, and coaches won’t mention it, but everyone wants their STUD to get some recognition. And what better way to do that than winning the Heisman trophy. Of course, it’s early in the season, but we already have some contenders for the trophy. Keep in mind, there’s always some unknown who comes out of nowhere to make an impact late in the season, but as of right now, these guys have the jump on their competition.
Jamal Lord, QB, Nebraska
Lord’s first game, he had 6 carries for over 170 yards. I would say he was the front-runner as of right now. As the main gun of Nebraska’s option attack, it is hard to shut Lord down because it makes the defense vulnerable to the other factors of the option. Through 2 weeks, Lord has 21 carries for 212 yards and 1 TD. If anything were to bring his campaign down, it would be his passing. Lord’s QB rating is a low 46.3, while completing just 6 of 15 passes for 59 yards and 2 Ints. (no touchdowns). If he can improve in the passing game, Jamal Lord will be tough to beat out for the Heisman
Cedric Cobbs, RB, Arkansas
Cobbs is Arkansas’ offense. Through three games, Cobbs has 74 rushes for 542 yards (7.3 ypc) and 8 TDs. He is a load. Teams have put 8-9 guys in the box, and Cobbs has still had success. This can be attributed to two things:
1. Arkansas’ O-line.
2. The play of QB Matt Jones
Jones’ was a question mark coming into the season, especially his throwing ability, but he has answered the call and has made teams pay for crowding the line by throwing some deep balls. Jones’ running skills also keeps opponents honest and takes pressure off of Cobbs to carry the entire team on his back. Look for Cobbs to be successful as Jones is successful.
Kevin Jones, RB, Virginia Tech
Through two games, Jones has 19 rushes for 118 yards and a touchdown. Mid-way through his 3rd game, he was injured in the third quarter and didn’t not return, so his numbers were skewed a little. Still, there’s no denying Jones’ toughness and speed on the playing field. With as many weapons as V-Tech has, there’s no way teams can simply decided to “shut down” Jones, and this has led to a couple of big games by the running back. Some of his carries are taken away by the mobile quarterbacks Tech has in Randall and Vick, but as the season wears on look for the Hokies to go to Jones more and more.
Greg Jones, RB, Florida State
Quite possibly the strongest running back in the league. As he goes, FSU goes. The ‘Noles have struggled out of the gate, going 2-2, but in Jones’ first two games he has rushed the ball 72 times for 421 yards and a touchdown. If FSU can get Jones’ going (‘Noles only had 73 yards rushing in their loss to Auburn), they can get back on track. By the end of the season, look for the ‘Noles and Greg Jones to be at the top of the polls and Heisman list, respectively.
Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Pittsburgh
Calling all DBs…Calling all DBs. Just don’t show up to the game, this guy in unguardable. 12 receptions for 181 yards (15 ypr) and a touchdown. But Fitzgerald does more for his team than put up numbers. He stretches the defense and makes them double-team him, which opens up Pitts Offense to run and hit other WRs, as Rutherford has been effective in doing so. Fitzgerald will have to really work to be a front runner for the Heisman, as teams will try to shut him down. If Pitt is successful running and throwing, that will open up Fitzgerald.
There are a few other players who could make some noise as the season rolls along: Roy Williams, WR, Texas; Mike Williams, WR, USC; Carnell Williams, RB, Auburn; Ell Roberson, QB, Kansas State.
As the season rolls along, keep and eye out for all of these STUDS and we’ll see who can claim the prestigious trophy known as The Heisman™. Good luck gentlemen <% if notHEAD1 %><% end if %>
