Madden
Planet is a non-profit making website produced and maintained
by a staff of volunteers who care passionately about
the game of Madden, and the community that has built
up around the game.
The
site has its origins dating back to 1995, a website
called Madden Central. The site was started by Mike
Murphy and became the recognised leader in the Madden
community, and a standard against which all other
gaming websites were compared. It received much attention
from the EA producers of the game who gave the site
interviews often ahead of major sports gaming websites
like Gamespot, and who posted on the forums.
The
website was owned by a company called Gamers Alliance,
and when Mike Murphy moved on to bigger and better
things he handed over the reigns to Mike Moen. Mike
ran the site for approximately 12 months before himself
retiring, and it was at that stage that AndyP was
asked to take over the running of the site.
Gamers
Alliance owned the rights to the Madden Central domain
name, and when the company closed down its operations,
all assets, including the domain name for maddencentral.com,
were sold.
The
site however continued, a new host was found at Gamespy,
and a new name was established. The site flourished
at Gamespy and received well in excess of 8 million
hits a month on the network. However, over the course
of time Gamespy made it clear that as part of the
consolidation in network operations, hosted websites
would receive much limited resources and could not
comfortably accommodate a site of this size. Ultimately
it was decided to move away from Gamespy and become
an exclusively independent website. Given the choice
of removing features from the site, and making the
website smaller to fit easily into the Gamespy model,
a tough decision was made to leave.
Rights
to the domain were once again held by Gamespy, who
allowed ownership to lapse, so once again a new name
was acquired. Madden Planet was born, and here we
are today.
Amongst
those who work on the Madden game, amongst the EA
staff, producers, testers, and all who contact us
to offer their support, the site is recognised as
the longest standing, most well established, and innovative
Madden website on the net.
Welcome
to 2004. As we look ahead to another exciting year
of Madden gaming, thank you for visiting, and if you
have been a regular over many years, thank you for
your continued support.
