Last year Tiger Woods received some criticism for being too easy. The introduction of 'Tiger Vision' introduced the idea of 'money' putts - basically a spot appeared on the green and you just had to moce the cursor towards it to sink the putt. Judging power wasn't even an issue. Sometimes you could have up to 4 Tiger Vision putts in a single round making it extremely easy to shoot a low score. What have EA done with Tiger Vision this year ? ... scrapped it. It's gone. Replaced by a much harder and demanding putting system. Caddy tips are also gone and the cursor used to line up your putts.. that's gone too. Instead, EA have put in a completely new grid system on the green to help make it simpler to read the green but from now on the rest is up to you. The new analog putting system makes judging the strength of the putt especially demanding because it is determined by how far you pull the putter head back from the ball. Just like in real life - the further you pull the putter head back the harder you are going to hit the ball.
But the improvements to Tiger Woods PGA Tour doesn't stop there. Using one analog stick wasn't enough, so EA have decided to put the second stick to use as well. The right stick is now used to give you more control over where the ball is going. By moving a target positioned on the ball you can either hook or slice the shot. Equally, when putting if you position the cursor on the ball in different places you can control the ball, either by applying some top spin or back spin. It's a nice implementation of the right stick and just makes you think a little more about how you are going to hit your shot to achieve the result you want.
The game also features a 'GameBreaker' guage which will fill up as you gain momentum and make your move up the leaderboard. It can be actived to give you a more powerful and accurate shot. This is realsitic because golf is a game of confidence and momentum and once you are at the top of your game you will find that you can hit shots a bit further or more accurately than you otherwise would be able to. Gamebreaker is designed to represent that effect.
But the biggest news comes last and for me it's probably the best news. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06 will now feature a 4 player game online meaning that you aren't just restricted to a single head-to-head matchup as in previous years. This addition is long overdue but it's proof again that EA are listening to the consumers and implementing many of the suggestions as well as acting on the feedback they received last year.
Tiger Woods 06 will be a much more realistic game than in previous years and the new additions will go down well among those of us who wanted to see the series take a turn towards more realism and a less arcade style golf.
