Review Summary

9.2 Gameplay
The gameplay in Gran Turismo 4, while largely unchanged from Gran Turismo 3 in any major way, is polished and cleaned up so that the handling and sensation of driving at high speed is better than ever. The only downside is that after almost 4 years of development there really isn't much more to it than there was in GT3 and the online gameplay we were hoping for hasn't arrived (yet). Likewise the AI of the CPU drivers remains a disappointment. Nevertheless there has been an expansion to the number of cars on offer and the high standards set by previous versions of the game are well and truly maintained in this game.
10.0 Graphics
The graphics of GT4 can be described using two words - "stunning" and "beautiful". The standard of what could be achieved on the PlayStation 2 was laid down by Polyphony Digital with GT3 and many games have tried and failed to meet those same standards. As a result GT3 is one of the best graphical experiences on the PS2, so you can imagine that GT4 is yet another improvement on that. Just imagine what the next gen version will look like ?
9.5 Longevity
GT4 is a car enthusiasts dream, with so many cars available for you to buy, collect and drive you can drive forever in order to acquire every single one in your collection. I played the game for over 2 hours and still managed to complete 0%, so you will need to set aside plenty of time to work your way through all the different races and licenses in GT4. But you were planning on setting aside plenty of hours to play the game anyway, right ?
9.5 Presentation
The presentation has also been polished up from GT3. Menus are fantastically crisp and clear, nicely laid out and easy to navigate around.
9.2 Sound
Sound is always a problem area for most games, especially those involving commentary. It's to the benefit of GT4 then that the game has no commentary and like most driving games, recreating the sounds of the engines is done to good effect.
9.5 Overall
There are some things we haven't yet mentioned, like the ability to capture still photos of your cars either by dropping them straight into specific landscapes of your choosing or just to take some snaps from saved replays. Either way as cool as that might be it doesn't compensate for the lack of online play which hurts the game somewhat. Nevertheless this still remains the gold standard of video game car racing and should be added to your gaming collection without hesitation.
