Gameplay FIFA gameplay has changed slightly over the recent years but has remained largely consistent to its core values. Those values include recreating a game of soccer that incorporates as many famous stadiums as possible, licenses for the most popular leagues with all the teams in those leagues, the most famous players in the world and is fundamentally a 'fun' game to play with a shallow learning curve. Based on those factors this is the best FIFA yet. EA has added plenty of enhancements to the gameplay and they have definitely improved the core gameplay. However FIFA is still limited in many areas and it's a far from being a perfectly recreated game of soccer. The controls are a concern, players seem to move sluggishly on the default settings and control can be tough at times. EA have however included many nice moves that can be pulled off via the right stick (similar to the 'trick stick' found in other EA games) and those are a nice addition.

Graphics The stadiums look beautiful and the team uniforms are carefully and accurately recreated complete with shirt sponsors and number styles, right down to the smallest detail. However the player models are still a disappointment. Players like David Beckham have an incredible likeness to their real life counterparts, but beyond their likeness they are visually unappealing and on a console like the Xbox the player models could behave and look a lot more realistic.

Longevity FIFA 06 has so much longevity that if the gameplay didn't frustrate you quite so much you could see yourself playing it right up to the release of 07. Every league can be played in full, multiple seasons are available in manager mode and individual cup competitions can be played separately or as part of manager mode if you choose. The manager mode has more depth and substance than it has done in any previous FIFA, although it could still be a lot deeper. The FIFA 06 challenges are a nice addition and their completion yields historic players, new stadiums, new jerseys and more besides. Oh, and then there's online gameplay and the FIFA lounge to add a multiplayer dimension to top things off.

Presentation This is the best presented FIFA every. The menus are slick and easy to navigate. The soundtracks are combined with classic game audio clips and there are videos of classic goals available to watch. On the field the presentation is like a television broadcast with commentary that doesn't always manage to keep up with the play but which adds excitement and passion to the game. As noted above, the uniforms and stadiums are impressive.

Sound The soundtracks are enjoyable with many familiar tunes amongst the considerable library to choose from.

Overall FIFA is a series that you will either love or hate. Soccer fans are divided between FIFA and Pro Evolution (or Winning Eleven depending on your location) as the best soccer game, each passionately fighting their corner. Generally speaking if you like eye candy and licenses with real teams and players then FIFA is the one to pick. If you prefer a more accurate simulation representation of soccer then you would likely choose Pro Evo. FIFA 06 is without a doubt a move in the right direction but still has some way to go before it can get close to the high standards set by Konami.
